One might think that buying land is easier than buying a house - untrue. When you buy a house you're usually buying a complete package, ready to move into. But when you buy land you have to consider things like slope, water drainage, road access, water and electric location, access for construction equipment, higher interest rates for loans, plot and topographical surveys. It's like buying a car chassis and then figuring out what engine, transmission and fuel systems you'll need after.
What did we want in a solar? A solar, by the way, is the spanish word for land, plot or property. Finca is the word for acreage or refers to a larger plot.
What we wanted:
- Ocean view
- Sunset view also
- At least 1,000 square meters
- Relatively flat
- Close to beach
- Quiet
- Under $100/ square meter
What we saw:
1) 1,800 sq mtrs, flat, slight ocean view, wedged between 2 other houses, quiet, Barrio Puntas, 10 minute walk to beach - $100 per square meter
2) 700 sq mtrs, slight hill, slight ocean view (could be blocked in future), quiet, Barrio Puntas, 10 minute walk to beach, had knock down house on property - $150 per square meter
3) 2,988 sq mtrs, 1/4 on slope, ocean/sunset view, quiet, Barrio Pueblo, 5 minute drive to beach - $33 per square meter
4) 1,800 sq mtrs, flat, distant ocean view, houses immediately next door, quiet, Barrio Calvache, 15 minute drive to beach - $50 per square meter

The horse in our valley
What we now own:
#3! We felt if you're buying land in Rincon (Land of Beautiful Sunsets) you need to have the sunset view. This piece overlooks a green valley where a neighbor's white horse grazes and the sky looks like it's on fire as the sun sets behind a mountain in the ocean (Desecheo).

Now are we really going to be able to build a house of shipping containers on this dirt?
